THREE

Highland Presbyterian Church eNewsletter
January 26, 2011

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Loen Schelhasa           Clara Rottsolk                John Fowler

The Buxtehude Consort to Perform Handel's Apollo e Dafne
Not every romance was meant to be, even if you're a triumphant god returning from battle. Especially for Valentine's Day, The Buxtehude Consort is presenting a mythological tale of unrequited love, Georg Frederick Handel's Apollo e Dafne. One of Handel's earlier dramatic Italian cantatas, Apollo e Dafne tells the tale of Apollo's triumphant return from battle with a great serpent, whereupon he arrogantly boasts that Cupid's arrows are no match for his own skills. Retribution is swift, as Apollo falls hopelessly in love with the nymph Dafne, who spurns his advance and flees.

The role of Apollo is sung by baritone John Fowler and Dafne by soprano Clara Rottsolk, accompanied by an instrumental ensemble, led by harpsichordist Leon Schelhase, featuring leading Baroque musicians playing period instruments. Instrumental music by Telemann rounds out the program.

Sunday, February 19, 4:00 p.m. in Highland's sanctuary. (Tickets: $25 regular admission, $20 Seniors, $10. Students). Tickets are on sale at their web site www.buxtehudeconsort.org or at the door.

STEWARDSHIP of the ENVIRONMENT
Please take time to use our recycling containers as you dispose of used cans, bottles, paper and trash. They are located in the Narthex and Fellowship Hall. Containers are well marked for each of these items. Currently, Highland PC cannot participate in the county wide recycling program because trash, plastic/cans, and paper are not deposited in the designated containers, and are co-mingled. Please help children who cannot read the signs to use the recycling containers correctly. Please remind each other of the importance of recycling and our ministry of Environmental Stewardship. The Environmental Stewardship Committee

Highland’s Session has divided all programs and committees into the following councils: Worship, Congregational Life, Christian Education, Care and Compassion, and Mission. THREE has been arranged by categories corresponding to these councils. Other categories that have been added to THREE are Youth and General Information.
