Letter from Rev. Allison Beaulieu

Dear Highland,

As I stand in the liminal space between sabbatical and my first week at Highland, I find myself exceedingly grateful. My sabbatical has been wonderful, a perfect mixture of relaxation and activity. Some of the highlights include camping with my kids at Jellystone in Hagerstown Maryland, a visit to my in laws (and Micky) in Orlando Florida, a deep sea fishing adventure that yielded a gorgeous red snapper, a visit to friends in New York City, and a trip to the Poconos where we hiked around the beautiful Bushkill Falls. And then there were the smaller moments that meant just as much: watching my sons fly their remote control airplane during sunset, lots of ice cream trips to Son’s, setting up lemonade stands, early morning walks, and endless games of scrabble. The pace of life slowed down for twelve weeks in a way that it hasn’t since I started ministry a little over 15 years ago! It was a blessing and a gift. However, as nice as sabbatical was, I had a sense of restlessness because honestly, ministry is part of who I am. When I’m not engaged in ministry, life feels a little “incomplete”. So many times during my sabbatical, I found myself thanking God for the opportunity that lays before me…this call to Highland, where I can continue to live into the calling that was placed deep in heart. I have started to meet some of you and all my interactions so far have confirmed my thoughts that this is the right call at the right time. I couldn’t be happier to be with you and I couldn’t be more excited about the possibilities. One of my top priorities in the next few months is to get to know you, to listen to your faith journeys, and hear the story of Highland. So please reach out and let’s get a date on the calendar to get to know one another! Another priority is to meet with session and committees to see where Highland is excelling and also see where there might be holes. Getting to know the staff one-on-one is also a top priority for me. The Highland staff is extremely gifted and I want to maximize those gifts and create a strong team. Finally, I want to make sure we begin the contemporary service again and that entails getting the right people at the table. As we map out a process to revitalize that service, I hope anyone who is invested in that service makes themselves known to me. The success of that service rests heavily on the team that will bring it to life as well as the Spirit moving in their hearts. I am so excited to begin this good work alongside you! I truly believe God has brought us together for such a time as this. Thank you so much for calling me to be your next Senior Pastor. I look forward to many good and fruitful years at Highland.
