Ephesians 6:10-20
Weekly Scripture

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
19Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

“BLANKETS +” (previously the “Blankets of Hope Program”) ANNUAL MISSION PROJECT OF HIGHLAND’S PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN
Please see Sunday, February 14 bulletin insert!
Thousands of BLANKETS, Baby-Care Kits and Health Kits have been sent to Haiti by Church World Service. With Highland’s help, many more will be sent as will tools and supplies to help the Haitians rebuild their lives once the initial emergency is past. Some of our money will also go to people in other areas of the world who need blankets and other emergency supplies. If you would like to support this effort, you will find “Blankets +” envelopes in the pew racks. Checks may be written to Highland and earmarked Church World Service.(CWS)
CWS began in response to an emergency.
Americans from different Christian traditions founded Church World Service to feed post-war Europe in 1946. Today, that union has expanded and continues in southeastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas. Church World Service provides sustainable self-help and development assistance, disaster relief and refugee assistance around the world with support from 35 U.S.-based, Christian denominations and others interested in helping a hurting world. In the past 30 years alone, as neighbors have reached out to neighbors around the world, the percentage of people living in absolute poverty in the developing world has been cut in half, and the literacy rate has more than doubled, from 35 percent to 77 percent. Church World Service is part of this worldwide effort with the support and generosity of individuals, families and communities who wish to make a difference.
CWS is helping to meet emergency needs in the aftermath of the devastating January 12 earthquake. Within 24 hours after the quake, CWS and its partners began providing basic supplies, prepositioned in the Dominican Republic. It is working with partners to provide water, food, temporary shelter and health assistance. Having worked in partnership in Haiti since 1954, CWS will also help to support communities in the long struggle to rebuild.
How you can help: Please contribute online or by phoning 800-297-1516 or by mailing your contribution to Church World Service, P.O. Box 968, Elkhart, IN 46515 (please indicate Haiti Earthquake). CWS Kits and blankets are also urgently needed. Thank you!

LIVING 2010 IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD
Relating to God is how we are created to live in our world! Establishing guidelines to practice keeping God at the center of all that we do is key to our relationship, discipleship and growth as Christians. This six week class, led by Ann Osborne begins at 6:45 p.m. in Room 208. The class explores six questions and areas of our lives where we can invite God’s participation. On February 10 a panel comprised of Linda Brackbill, Chris Walker, Jan Longenecker and Steve Brennaman will share ideas on the topic “How do you approach work as part of your way of being a disciple, rather than as something divorced from your faith journey?” Each panelist will share a bit of their own vocational story. They will give some ideas about how they live out God’s call for their lives.

PHILIPPIANS – “Sheer Encouragement for a Time of Stress”
I’d like to invite you to a JOY-filled journey as we gather in the Upper Room to read and study Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi. It’s a favorite of mine and the four short chapters are Paul at his very best. In his introduction to Philippians, Eugene Peterson says: “This is Paul’s happiest letter. And the happiness is infectious. Before we’ve read a dozen lines, we begin to feel the joy ourselves – the dance of words and the exclamation of delight have a way of getting inside us.” I’ve studied this book with biblical scholar Earl Palmer who likes to label Philippians as “Sheer Encouragement for a Time of Stress.” If you want to start the new year sharing with joy and encouragement – join me at w3C! -- Dr. Rabey
