THREE

May 8, 2008

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Acts 2:1- 4

Peter, standing with the eleven said listen to what I say, what has happened is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

In the last days it will be, God

declares,

that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your

daughters shall prophesy,

and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall

dream dreams.

Even upon my slaves, both men

and women,

in those days I will pour out my Spirit;

and they shall prophesy,

And I will show portents in the

heaven above

and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and

smoky mist.

The sun shall turn to darkness

and the moon to blood,

before the coming of the

Lord’s great and glorious day.

Then everyone who calls on the

name of the Lord shall

be saved.

Acts 2:17-21

WORSHIP

Sunday, May 11 – Pentecost and 50th Anniversary Celebration

Hallelujah! Highland is 50!

Were going to celebrate this Sunday, May 11 - PENTECOST SUNDAY - at the 10:00 a.m. worship service in the sanctuary. Come to church this Sunday with a happy heart, full of praise, thanksgiving, and joy that Highland Church was chartered by 149 original members on Pentecost Sunday in 1958. Remember to wear red clothing on Sunday because red is the color of Pentecost when the fires of the Holy Spirit swept through Gods new church, as recorded in Acts 2.

The centerpieces of our May 11 worship service and celebration are:

·      Welcoming the Reverend Kirk A. Hudson and his wife, Callie, back to Highland. He was our first called pastor, serving from April 1, 1959 until August 1967  -  Reverend Hudson will preach.

·      Welcoming to the worship service Mrs. Joyce McClintock, whose husband, the Reverend Ross S. McClintock, served as Highlands senior pastor from September 10, 1967 until June 30, 1992

·      Welcoming the Reverend Charles Gross, Interim Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of Donegal, who will represent our local presbytery and the Presbyterian Church USA

·      Paying tribute to the 30 individuals who live in the Lancaster area who were among the 149 charter members.  Most are still members of Highland.  A complete roster of all the Charter Members is mounted in the Charter Room near the Church office.

·      Welcoming  the 16 members of the 2008 Commissioning Class into membership of Highland Church

·      Reaffirming our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Redeemer by reciting  commitment vows.

·      Witnessing the unveiling and hanging of the Landscape Anniversary  Banner that contains the names of current Highland members

·        Listening to a bagpiper bring us to and dismiss us from worship

We regret that two individuals who had major leadership roles in helping to bring Highland to this memorable milestone in Highlands relatively young life can not be with us this Sunday.

  • The Rev. Warren H. Ball who was the organizing pastor of Highland Church from the fall of 1957 - Warren and his wife, Gwen, send their regrets and wish us a joyous occasion on Sunday. Gwen is one of the original 149 charter members of our church
  • The Rev. Dr. Lawrence R. Chottiner, who served as our senior pastor from June 1994 until August 31, 2006 - He was invited to participate in this week’s worship service, but had to decline because of his pastoral responsibility as senior pastor at the Salisbury Presbyterian Church in Midlothian, Va.

Sunday, May 11 - continued

  ANNIVERSARY BANNER

As part of our worship service today, a beautiful banner will be unveiled and hung in the sanctuary commemorating Highland Churchs 50th Anniversary.

Elder Mary Kay Hymes describes the banner in these words: Our cross anchors Highland Church to the hill where it serves as a light to others. Beside it runs a river of living water reminding us that Jesus brings eternal life wherever the Holy Spirit dwells. The hand-dyed fabrics, batiks, quilting and beadwork making up the sky and trees create images within the quilt that focus our thoughts on the beauty of Gods creation.

This is a collaborative banner effort of the Highland Quilters: Created by Phyllis Thompson (Quilter) and Mary Kay Hymes (Beads/Applique); Design by Lorraine Strangness; Assisted by: Louise Arvidson, Elaine Foreman, Juanita Fowler, Mary Gooding, Brenda Hillard, Karen Hirte, Sharon Johnstone, Judy Mitchell, and Wilda Scoles,

BAGPIPER

The guest bagpiper will be Robert Davidson of Harrisburg. He has been playing the bagpipes for 36 years. For 25 years, he was associated with the Kiltie Band of York and was its leader for many of those years. He now plays at church events, weddings, and other gatherings. He will be playing "Simple Gifts" and Highland Cathedral.

RECEPTION

A reception will be held in Fellowship Hall immediately after the May 11 worship service to honor the Charter Members and members of the Commissioning Class who will have just been confirmed.

Symbolically, this event in Fellowship Hall will mark our past (memories) and our future (mission) by honoring those who laid the original foundation for Highland Church and those, the Commissioning Class, who are our future and the foundation of Highland for the next 50 years.

The former members of the Hospitality Committee were invited and agreed to serve the food and beverages for Sunday’s reception in Fellowship Hall. We will salute and give thanks to the former members of the Hospitality Committee.

MISSIONS

In a recent letter from Alice Winters (Highland supported missionary in Colombia), she wrote the following:

"I am just back from the second day of hearing our students defend their theses.  In Colombia you have to write a thesis even for a bachelor's degree (here called a licenciatura).  We have twelve men and women who will receive their degrees as professionals in theology on April 19.  I am proud of each one.  It's an important step for them, but also for the university since this will be our first graduation since we were formally recognized by the Colombian government.

"Also you will be interested to know that one of the professors in the Uraba project you have supported and prayed for was elected at the January synod meeting to be the new Executive Secretary of the Synod (which is like our General Assembly).  He is a fine young man and has done a wonderful job in upgrading the education program there. He will continue in this ministry, since the job of synod exec is not full time.  His name is Diego, and I know he would appreciate your prayers."

Please keep Alice Winters, her students, recent graduates and especially Diego, the new Executive Secretary of the Synod in Colombia in your prayers.

ALTERNATIVE GIVING

As we celebrate Mother's Day and Pentecost Sunday, we are reminded that a birth is involved in both of these celebrations. Why not honor mothers and the birth of the church with a gift from the Alternative Giving Catalogue? For instance, you can provide for prenatal care and delivery in Malawi, Africa, for a $10 gift. You could also buy a pregnant goat for $120 that the Heifer Project will present to a family in need. Use your present catalogue or pick up another at the church office, and send your donation to our business manager. Gift cards are also available.  If you have questions, call Margaret Cook at 464-1125 or e-mail her at margaret_cook@hotmail.com.

ARTHRITIS COURSE

The Parish Nurses are considering (depending upon the interest) offering a self-help course sponsored by a representative of the Arthritis Foundation. It would be held in the morning for two hours in October and November. The real cost of the course is a book, The Arthritis Handbook, for $25.00. There are scholarships available through the Arthritis Foundation. The course is a series of six weekly classes that focus on basic disease information, relaxation techniques for pain and stress management, an overview of arthritis medications, recommendations on how to start an exercise program, and coping and problem-solving strategies. There is growing evidence that arthritis patients who take an active role in caring for themselves and in managing their disease along with comprehensive medical treatment will do better. There is a sign-up sheet in the office area. If you have any questions, please call Linda Shugarts at 871-3282. Please sign up by June 1.
