Welcome to Highland

Welcome to Highland Presbyterian Church!  Highland is one of more than 10,000 congregations of Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) witnessing to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Founded in 1958, Highland seeks to serve the community, the city, and the world as A People Following Jesus.

If you are a newcomer to Highland, please let us know by signing the Friendship Book as it is passed during the announcements. Also, please introduce yourself to one of the pastors at the conclusion of the service--and stop by the Welcome Center in the Lounge to discover what is happening now at Highland!  There is an extensive Christian Education program for persons of all ages, and there are numerous opportunities for fellowship, service, and prayer to be found in the many different groups and organizations that meet throughout the week at Highland Church.

Hallelujah! Highland is 50!

And were going to celebrate next Sunday, May 11 - PENTECOST SUNDAY - at the 10 a.m. worship service in the sanctuary. Come to church that day with a Happy Heart, full of Praise, Thanksgiving, and Joy that Gods church was created on this hilltop and was chartered by 149 original members. Also, please wear red that day (red is the color of Pentecost when the red fires of the Holy Spirit swept through Gods new church, as recorded in Acts 2). The actual date of Highlands chartering was Sunday, May 24 which was Pentecost Sunday in 1958.

The highlights of our May 11 worship service and celebration are:

·      Welcoming The Rev. Warren H. Ball, and his wife, Gwendolyn, back to Highland. He was Highlands organizing pastor from the fall of 1957 until Easter Sunday in March 1959.

·      Welcoming The Rev. Kirk A. Hudson and his wife, Callie, back to Highland. He was our first called pastor, serving from April 1, 1959 until August 1967 when Highlands membership had grown to 1,000 members.  Rev. Hudson will preach.

·      Welcoming to the worship service Mrs. Joyce McClintock, whose husband, the Rev. Ross S. McClintock, served as Highlands senior pastor from September 10, 1967 until June 30, 1992.

·      Welcoming the Rev. Charles Gross, interim executive presbyter of the Presbytery of Donegal, who will represent our local presbytery and the Presbyterian Church (USA).

·      Paying tribute to and honoring the 30 individuals (names listed on the back) who live in the Lancaster area who were among the 149 charter members.  Most are still members of Highland.  (a complete roster of all of the chartering members is mounted in the Charter Room near the Church office).

·      Welcoming the 17 members of the 2008 Commissioning Class into membership of Highland Church.

·      Reaffirming our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Redeemer by reciting the same commitment vows more than 5,800 individuals have stated since 1958 when they joined the fellowship of believers at Highland.

·      Witnessing the unveiling and hanging of the Signature Banner that contains the names of current Highland members.  Note: More members will be able to add their names to this banner at a later date.

·      Listening to a bagpiper bring us to and dismiss us from worship, playing the beautiful tune, Highland Cathedral.

A reception is planned following the worship service to greet Rev. Ball, Rev. Hudson, Mrs. McClintock, the Charter Members, and the members of the Commissioning Class. Symbolically, this event in Fellowship Hall will mark our past (Memories) and our future (Mission) by honoring those who laid the original foundation for Highland Church, and the Commissioning Class, who are our future and the foundation of Highland for the next 50 years.

A Transition to the Next 50 Years. This Pentecost Sunday also will be a transitional time for all Highland members to move forward to a spiritual awakening outlined and explained for us in the language of Highlands powerful Vision Statement, which was first adopted by Session in 2002.

To prepare for this transition and the joyous expectation of calling a Senior Pastor this fall, our pastors and the 50th Anniversary Committee, are encouraging every Highland member to join the Commissioning Class in writing a personal Faith Statement by May 11. Where are you on your faith journey? What is the status of your relationship to Jesus Christ and God? What roles do prayer and worship play in your daily life? Are you fully using your God-given spiritual gifts and your time, talents and treasures to the Glory of God? This is intended to be a very personal, private, but highly meaningful exercise to prepare each of us for a more meaningful and spiritual life.

THE RUTH PROJECT - Two years ago Highland's Mission Team helped replace the church roof in the little village of Masacua.  During that time, the women of the church told them about The Ruth Project. The women have begun a cottage industry.  Their goal is to make school uniforms for their children and for sale to make the project self-sustaining. They have 5 donated sewing machines  (3 of which work). Their plan is to hire a teacher who will teach them to read patterns and perfect their sewing skills. This month a container of used medical equipment will be shipped to El Salvador.  There will be room in the container for sewing materials (new or used) for The Ruth Project. ARTHRITIS COURSE OFFERED The Parish Nurses are considering (depending upon the interest) offering a self-help course sponsored by a representative of the Arthritis Foundation. It would be held in the morning for two hours in October and November. The real cost of the course is a book, The Arthritis Handbook, for $25.00. There are scholarships available through the Arthritis Foundation. The course is a series of six weekly classes that focus on basic disease information, relaxation techniques for pain and stress management, an overview of arthritis medications, recommendations on how to start an exercise program, and coping and problem-solving strategies. There is growing evidence that arthritis patients who take an active role in caring for themselves and in managing their disease along with comprehensive medical treatment will do better. There is a sign-up sheet in the office area. If you have any questions, please call Linda Shugarts at 871-3282. Please sign up by

June 1.

CAMP DONEGAL There are only two weeks left until the early-bird discount deadline at Camp Donegal. Register now to get into the camp of your choice at the reduced rate! There are still many camping opportunities available. For more information, call the camp office at (717) 862-3722 or visit us online at www.campdonegal.org.

HOMELESS STUDENTS Camp Donegal Project - For the 5th consecutive year, the Local Outreach Committee would like to send up to 18 students from the Lancaster City Homeless Student Program to Camp Donegal for a week of summer fun in a care-free Christian atmosphere. We need your help! It will cost about $350 per child, and requires volunteers to drive the children to and from Camp. If you would like to be involved, send your donations to the Church now (marked Homeless Student Camp Donegal), or call Nancy Holtzapple at

394-1799, to offer driving assistance.
